Biotin Biotin is everywhere in the hair supplement world, and the marketing is loud. The reality is more nuanced. Actual biotin deficiency is rare in healthy adults, and supplementing when you're not deficient probably won't do much. Where it gets interesting is that certain medications — including some antibiotics and long-term anticonvulsants — can deplete biotin over time. If you're on those, it's worth a conversation with your doctor. Otherwise, biotin's reputation outpaces its evidence for most people.

Zinc Zinc plays a role in hair tissue growth and repair, and it helps keep the oil glands around follicles functioning properly. Both deficiency and excess zinc have been associated with hair loss — which is a good reminder that more isn't always better. Supplementing without knowing your levels can backfire.

Vitamin B12 B12 deficiency is particularly common in people following plant-based diets, older adults, and those taking metformin or proton pump inhibitors long-term. Low B12 affects red blood cell production, which in turn affects how much oxygen and nutrients reach your scalp. Hair thinning, fatigue, and brain fog often show up together when B12 is the culprit.

The Testing Question Nobody Talks About Enough

Here's where a lot of people go sideways: they skip the testing and go straight to supplementing. It feels proactive. It's actually a bit of a gamble.

Supplements aren't consequence-free. Too much vitamin A, for example, is actually a documented cause of hair loss — and it's fat-soluble, meaning it accumulates in your body rather than flushing out. Excess selenium can cause hair breakage. Getting bloodwork done isn't just bureaucratic box-checking; it tells you whether you actually have a gap to fill.

A standard panel worth requesting from your primary care doctor or dermatologist includes ferritin (not just iron), 25-hydroxyvitamin D, B12, zinc, and a complete blood count. If you're seeing significant shedding or texture changes, a thyroid panel is also smart — thyroid dysfunction is another major hair disruptor that often gets overlooked until it's been going on for a while.

The Timeline Problem: Why You Want Results Faster Than Biology Allows

Let's be real about something: even when you identify the right deficiency and start correcting it, your hair is not going to bounce back in two weeks. Hair growth cycles run on a three-to-six month schedule. The follicle has to wake back up, start producing again, and then that new growth has to actually get long enough to be visible.

Most people who start addressing a deficiency won't see meaningful change for three to four months, and full recovery can take closer to a year. This is genuinely hard to sit with. It's also why so many people abandon the approach before it has time to work — or credit the wrong thing when their hair does improve.

The realistic expectation: reduced shedding often comes first, sometimes within six to eight weeks. Visible regrowth takes longer. Patience here isn't a platitude — it's just how follicle biology operates.

What This Means for Your Actual Routine

None of this means your topical products don't matter. A good scalp environment, proper moisture balance, and low-manipulation styling all still count. But they're working on the outside of the follicle. Nutrients work from the inside. If the internal supply chain is broken, the external work has a ceiling.
