Omega-3 fatty acids, found in fatty fish, walnuts, and flaxseed, support the lipid layer around follicles and have been linked to improvements in both growth rate and hair density. The American diet doesn't always make it easy to hit adequate omega-3 levels without being intentional about it.

How you handle your hair physically also adds up. Protective styling can be genuinely protective, but styles that create constant tension at the hairline or nape — especially over months or years — cause a type of damage called traction alopecia. The follicles don't disappear overnight. They thin gradually, and by the time it's obvious, some of that loss can be permanent.
